Some dorkster photos from the first day of school in my retro-grime kitchen on the first day of spring semester. Retro-grime makes it sound like the dirty dishes and plastic bags shut in the cabinet doors are totally on purpose. *Snaps for combat boots and prepster sweaters*

I feel like I've been posting a lot about school lately, which I don't particularly like because I think it dates me and/or makes my content exclusive to people in my situation. And I don't want to just be talking to students. Because frankly, we're all a bunch of free-thinking, starry-eyed liberal bozos with over-ambitious ideas about solving the world's problems. "So take your overly-hopeful and grossly unrealistic ideas and SHUT UP." (Direct quote from political science teacher. Man, I love that guy.) Maybe I'm thinking too much about it, but regardless, the thought has definitely crossed my mind. So here are a few thoughts that have been on my mind recently that will hopefully break me out of that? Does it need to be broken out of? Am I trying too hard right now? (Don't answer that.)

I'm researching a few things for an upcoming zine, one of them being SAD, or seasonal depression, or the-crappy-winter-blues-when-the-sun-never-comes-out-and-you-just-want-to-lie-in-bed-and-watch-trashy-TV-while-eating-old-Christmas-candy-and-rot-because-of-how-depleated-you-are-of-vitamin-D period of time. If you can't tell from that hyphenated modifier, this surely durely effects me and seems to be a little more difficult this year than others. Is it my own fault because I'm choosing to live in a tundra with pretty bad air quality that makes it pretty undesirable to go outside? Does this happen to you guys? What do you do to combat it? HOW DO YOU DEAL?

Also, find your opinions about Hipsters. And tell them to me. Especially those of you that don't live and go to school where I do. What is the hipster scene like where you are? Are they taking over the world? Is denying that you're a hipster a defining trait of being a hipster? I wanna know!

And one last one...I've seen bits and pieces of these shows, but I've never consistently followed any season of The Bachelor or Bachelorette until this season. And I'm kind of suprised that the show hasn't gotten more heat, you know, for being what it is. I mean, it's kind of a ridiculous idea and it is pretty degrading to the idea of commitment to one person, along with a myriad of other things (for instance, I'm pretty sure these girls get picked before even knowing who the bachelor would be, so how are all of these women automatically swooning over Ben? I don't understand that. What if you were on The Bachelor and then you met the guy and you just didn't click even though he thought you did? Do you have to like him automatically just because you're put in that situation? Are you contractually obliged to like him even though his hair makes him look like he's part of Hanson? That's where I mildy, key word: MILDLY, understand Bentley from last season for leaving early because he didn't like that chick because he liked that other chick from the other season of the bachelor more and thought she would be the new chick instead of this other chick that he got stuck with. See how much I know? I'm a freaking connoisseur of Bachelor history.) ANYWAYS, even if it's fake or scripted, if this guy is sincerely falling in love with this many women, what does that say about how important commitment and *gasp* monogamy is to our generation? Because nobody seems to find that as a problem. It's totally fine for some dingbat to mack on 25 different girls, didn't you know? How have I missed this? HOW AM I MISSING OUT ON THIS OPPORTUNITY TO GETAWAY WITH SO MUCH KISSING FROM SO MANY PEOPLE? (Read: joke). Not that I would be, but if I was ever in a situation similar to that, I don't know if I could genuinely fall in love with someone if I knew he would be kissing and potentially falling in love with someone else two hours later. It just HURTS MY FEELINGS, you know? It's like, "Oh Kacie B! I just feel for you and how jelly you're getting because Ben didn't take you on a one on one this week, but still likes you, but likes alllll these other girls too and I just want you and Ben to runaway together right now and not even bother with this dumb reality show because we all know Emily's too smart, Courtney's a beast, Blakely's scary, and Lindzi is a terrrrible kisser!!! Just DROP the show, IT'S NOT EVEN WORTH YOUR TIME, and just twirl your baton while you bum ski and drink your weight in wine with Ben in San Fran and just be in love! You don't need this show, ya hear me? TRUE LOVE DON'T NEED NO TV SHOW!"

I've been sucked in. And I can't turn back.

After seeing this clip on SNL, and seeing it surface around a few friends' blogs and facebooks, I think this is worthy of talking about.

I can't help but laugh about this because of how accurate it seems to me. And because it seems to be super present in the creative world. There's the ever-present debate of "Are everyone's feeble attempts at being artists and creative prodigies just ruining the creative world and discrediting the real artists and their crafts?" or, "It is so awesome that these things are so accessible and that everyone gets to create things which is one of the best expressions in the world! Everyone should get to be a part of it!"
Honestly, I don't know which one is right, if either could be just right or just wrong. But, I do know that I can't help but roll my eyes when a kid in school says to me says he's picked up falconry because he had mastered rock-climbing and film-making and needed a new hobby. Puh-leez.

So, I do want to know what you guys think! Do we really think we're capable of doing anything and everything? Are doctors and lawyers a dying breed? Are we at risk of being so self-promotional and even less self-aware? Are we a generation of self-serving wannabes? Let's talk it out!

LENGTHY POST AHEAD.

A few friends and I made the trek to Provo for Velour's 3rd Annual Slumber party last Saturday. On the schedule was Gils, The Moth and The Flame and Book on Tape Worm, which I had all heard of before, but I'd never seen live. Fortunately for me, they were all absolutely fantastic.

Gils, the first band, had some interesting and different songs that I loved. They had great harmonies and lovely songs, of which you can listen to one of them right here. And I'm telling you, there's just something about guy/girl harmonies that makes me really, really happy.

The Moth and The Flame are like a fusion of Radiohead and Beck which automatically spells groovy stuff. Their sound was different than most stuff I've been hearing lately and it was refreshing to see a band with innovative stuff and humble attitudes. I also love their album art. Like a lot. And I kind of fell in love with the frontman, too. But we'll just keep that on the DL.

Book on Tape Worm are absolute magic. Their songs are so well-crafted and filled with emotion that you couldn't help but be enthralled. A cello, beautiful harmonies, and delicate progressions made for some of the most pleasing music to my ears. And their lyrics. THEIR LYRICS. I'm not a big lyrics person at all and I rarely ever pay attention to them, but these lyrics were just so beautiful and poetic that you couldn't listen and not get emotional. I teared up a few times during their set because of how great they were.

What I loved most about the show was the atmosphere. It certainly lived up to the title "Slumber Party" with the entire audience sitting on blankets and snuggled up together. And the set was the best. Just the best. How can you not be happy as a clam when the moon is smiling smugly at you?

Overall and obviously, this was an incredible show with so many elements that made it a night to remember. Happy 6th Birthday, Velour!

I strangely love year in review posts. I love seeing a huge amount of time suddenly being jammed into a blog post. It's great. And while I think a comprehensive look at the year is probably not the most fascinating thing in the world for me or you to read, I'll give a list of a few stand-out events from this year.

Ate genie pig.
Started a food fight.
Met alter egos Jerry and Kerry from Baston/New Joizee/Brooklyn.
Slept in a hotel with a stranger I met in the airport.
Got a 2nd degree sunburn.
Roller skated until my knee caps were bruised and purple.
Played "Careless Whisper" on the harmonica.
Got the Bieber Fever.
Put a bird on it.
Brushed up on my Ted Bundy trivia.
Slept in past noon at least once a month.
Fell in love with Ron Swanson. And Jean-Ralphio.
Publicly vomited in the streets of Cuenca while buying a soccer jersey.
Was second-handedly victimized by Wind.
Participated in Carnaval.
Coned.
Unsuccessfully jump-served in a game of Volleyball.
Kissed a black man.
Whistled 3/4s of Handel's "Messiah".
Got Jiggy With It.

In reality (even though that list is 100% real), this year was a blast and I got to do a lot of great things with a lot of great people. I lived and loved in Ecuador for the first part of the year, had an fantastic summer full of adventures, and came back to school at USU in the fall to learn and do things I really love doing all while living with some of my best friends. It's been an excellent year and one that I know I will look fondly back on. And it was quite a good New Year celebration, especially considering its the last one and all.

It is crazy how much turmoil and despair is present in the world, but how a simple wedding between a commoner and a prince can make the world sigh for a moment and how a simple transition of time can bring the world together in unison as the new year begins. I went to Vegas the other day. I don't like Vegas. In fact, I pretty much hate it. It's full of sin and not much else. Granted, I spent the majority of the time sick in a hotel bed, but I never really liked it anyway. And really, for a Mormon, 80% of the cities events are pointless. WHATEVEZ.

BUT I DO HAVE TO SAY: the best part entirely was that we went to Cirque De Soleil's "O" and it was absolutely incredible. INCREDIBLE. For all the talk I'd heard about Cirque De Soleil in general, my expectations were pretty high and they still went above and beyond them. Also, the music is live. Wait, what? I know. It's insane. It was the water show and they had a 25 feet deep pool on stage. ON STAGE. I can't even describe half of the stuff because it was so cool. It was pricey, but it was well worth it. It did help that we had seats on the 5th row, too. Basically, it's good that Vegas has Cirque De Soleil. It does them good. And I highly recommend it. Go to this show.

A Very Velour Christmas

I had the great pleasure of attending the Velour Christmas show this year. It's the second time they've done it and it was marvelous. With 20+ local artists performing a smorgasbord of Christmas tunes, it was sure to be a good time no matter what. And it's at Velour, which you should know by now that it's the greatest place on earth, so it was inevitably great. We got see some great stuff from some of my favorites around these parts like Spencer and Isaac Russell, Pat Boyers of Gypsy Cab, Stuart Maxfield from Fictionist, Ryan Innes and some new favorites like Night Night, Dustin Christensen, Hue and Hum, Gills, and many more! It was a great night and I'm looking forward to more seeing more shows from some of these new favorites of mine.

It was a wonderful and magical night followed by a Provo burger from Sammy's...I think I'm starting to love Provo more and more....wait, what?

Our apartment missed the boat on Christmas decorations, which kind of always happens when you're in an apartment away from your parents' house. If you wait to decorate post-Thanksgiving, there are only three weeks left until school is done. So, our apartment was sans-cheer and I was REAL UPSET ABOUT IT. So today, in a fit of boredom/disctraction/procrastination/wanting to be cheerful, I made a zillion paper chains and pulled out every string of lights we had and threw them everywhere. Organized clutter. Arranged chaos. That's how I do it. And since we don't have a tree, I light-painted one. Coo, yeah? Coo.

I attended a concert tonight--AND IT WAS SO GREAT. I miss concerts so much. I'd heard a bunch about Seafinch before, and they were great. I only saw two instead of the full band, but sometimes that's just the way I like it. I love live music. I love it.

It's been a while since I've been to a good concert--a huge downfall of Logan. There's not a great music venue around these parts (Why Sound is fine, but it fits 20 people), even though there's a music scene dying to be born.Who wants to start a Velour here with me? Any takers?

A group of my comrades and I created a 70s, spoof newscast to introduce a class project. I did the filming and editing for the project, which after 3 days of editing magically disappeared only to have 3 days to make it all up and them some, and the film ended up being 92 minutes long. 92 MINUTES. It's a feature film. And it's insane. My brain hurts. It's about nothing super interesting or important unless you're into media literacy junk. Which I am, so I loved it. But you probably won't. Today, I cried. And it's been a really long time since I cried (and for me, that really means like two weeks). I've been so overwhelmed with some of the decisions and things that are happening in my life, and I feel like I haven't been cut out to take it all on. I think I'm just burned out. This semester has been so much harder than any before and much more time consuming. I expect a lot from myself, too, so that's been a whole other player in this stress game. So, in a random tangent, I've got a few things I want to say.

For the h8ers: I know the Internet is a dangerous place, but I just have to refute some of the things that I've been hearing lately. I love blogs and I love my blog. I love a lot of things about the Internet. I find more inspiration and more good things from this place than most others. I have found so many wonderful things from this place that I wouldn't have seen otherwise if it weren't for the web. And I've gotten to know a lot of really wonderful people from this blogging world as well. Not that my voice in the blogging world is anything substantial or of more importance than another, but I feel like I have found a community here full of people that are so supportive and positive and very unlike any other group of peoples I've encountered. I love what the blogging world is and I love what it's becoming. And I love my blog. I think I am good at this kind of stuff. I know there is no replacement to the real world, but this blog, however insignificant or "dumb", is a part of my life and I am proud of it.

I also am going to start doing whatever the crap I want to do. My sister just got a cello after years of lusting for one. It is so thrilling to see her get so passionate about something like this. And after I played it too, I thought, what are those things that I want to do that I'm just not doing? There's a LIST. And that's just STUPID. I should be DOING THEM. SO I'M GOING TO, ALRIGHT?! I'm going to play violin and I'm going to take some more dance classes. I'm going to make a movie and I'm going to live in New York. I'm going to make a magazine and I'm going to play in a band. I'm going to paint a mural and I'm going to build a treehouse. I'm going to buy a motorcycle and I'm going to learn to surf. I'm going to do it. And I'm going to do it all.

P.S. Today's temperatures were so cold that today's tears turned to slush on the way down my face.

I've been loving on Utah photographers lately and maybe a little too much, but there are just so many good ones out there makin' delicious whoopie-pie pictures.

This is miesh photography, and this woman, Michelle Frampton, is the master of the square formating, color scheming, film texturing, and compositioning. I ate this apple today. It was insanely delicious. It was the craziest looking apple, too. It had a vein-y inside and the meat turned dark red right after I took a bite...strange.

I spotted these bad boys at my parents' house the other day and I had to chuckle. Customized drum sticks? Of course! Little known fact for ya'll: both of my parents are professional musicians. Pretty cool, right? I was raised in one of "those" artsy fartsy houses.

As you know, WINTER IS HERE. It's pretty, so far. And Christmas is in six weeks? WHAAT? I love it. Thx-giving is in two weeks and two weeks after that skool is sooo dunzo. Can't wait. Even more. Here are a few of the final shots from this shoot. Again, to emphasize the context of the project, our assignment was to analyze political cartoons about the Tea Party and how they, the Tea Party, are represented. We chose to design a satirical photoshoot with a similar concept and tone of political cartoons that we analyzed.

What may be the most important photo is the last. We put this on our conclusion page to represent our desires to take a greater understanding of political cartoons, and the news and media more generally, and break down their hidden meanings and messages--to abandon what hegemonic ideals might be fed to us and use our brains to discover the truth. After all, "the truth will set you free."

Wowza. This class is turning me into a preacher. Anywho, for our project we designed a coloring/activity book to present our information. Sorry to break down this project into so many posts, but I'll have to show you how it turned out. It's definitely inspired me to print more stuff and maybe make a magazine! Woot woot!

More scenes from this photoshoot. Our project was to analyze the Tea Party and how it is represented in political cartoons. Political cartoons have a way of pointing out flaws and any extreme details about whatever subject they frame, so, we chose to recreate what we had seen the Tea Party represented as with a photoshoot and a satirical attitude. On the bottom is Sarah Palin and also involved in the party, but not shown here, is a member of the KKK. More photos are coming, again, of our finished product. Just to emphasize again, even though I shouldn't really have to, but this is all satire. SATIRE, PEOPLE.

I don't want to delve super in depth about the project or anything like that right here, but feel free to ask me more about it and I will definitely tell you!

School has been so hard, but so exciting this semester and I've been pleased as punch to have gotten to know these people and work with them. Any project is better when you get to do stuff like this!

I'm very superstitious. Not really, but I like to think that if I align myself with some weird superstitions, it can't hurt, right? So what do you do when this happens?

Tell me, people: WHAT DO I DO? I debated no more posts until the new year. Then I couldn't resist it. Now, I'm going for a hundred posts before the new year. BUT. What happens then? Do I have to blog 342 times the following year? I don't know if I can handle that? I don't know if I can handle 100 in 60 days. I mean, that's like 1.6 posts a day? HOW DO I WRITE A SIXTH OF A POST?

Anywho, the consensus from my league of followers (all 2.3 billion of you) was to continue forward. To post 100 times. To dream the Impossible Dream.

So, what am I going to blog about? Paige has my back. She's def got my back. (And yes, I am protecting Paige's identity because she didn't choose to step into this famous life of a blogger--it's just not fair to her).

This grew into 100+ ideas for this blog. If you have me added on facebook, do yourself a favor and look up this wall post. We went back and forth for maybe an hour with such topics for blog posts like PHOTOBLOG: In honor of Steve Jobs, a series of photos of people in black turtlenecks, why toddlers and tiaras is an assault to our American freedoms, Corey and Tapanga's relationship, DIY tutorial on how to do tutorials, happy lists, hate lists, hit lists, funny Asian commercials and cheesy blasters. Go look. It will entertain you for at least 5 minutes.

We had fall break last week.It was only a day off from school, but it was wonderful. Sista, Ma, Mags and I all went up to Adams Canyon for a little hike one day, and it was fantastic. It was absolutely beautiful and so full of fall-ness. I fear it is going to come to a close soon, and I sure hope not, but we best be making the most of this supreme weather in the next few days.

I've been listening to Mylo Xyloto nonstop. I am a Coldplay lover through and through. I've been incessantly listening to Paradise ever since it was released a few weeks ago and it's wonderful to have the whole album to accompany it. Few things inspire me in so many ways as good music like this. The album art, the music videos, and the music itself. Great stuff, I tell ya. Charlie Brown, Up in Flames, and Princess of China are some of my favorites so far...listen! And love!

Masquerade pt. 2. GUYS. Who's who? WHO'S WHO?! We went a little berserk in the Halloween store, to say the least. Sometimes you just can't resist it.

I finally caved--I joined Pinterest!

I was intentionally putting it off because I feared I would get addicted to it, but I couldn't resist it any longer. I use my tumblr as my main inspiration board, so I don't know how this will be much overlapping or working, but we'll see. BUT FOR NOW--take a look at my boards! They are a work in progress with my travel one with much more attention...heh. I got a little crazy and started looking up all the places that I've traveled to and posted pictures, so, most on there are places I've been (just have to toot my own horn, alright).

But now I've been thinking more and more about travel...I want to start working towards a really great trip of some sort in the near future. Where should I go? --I cry every single time I watch Hook. Even if I just listen to a song from it, I tear up. Peter Pan is one of my favorite stories ever. Mostly, it's because I think I'll always be scared of growing up. Most people are, right?

--I am a journalism and communications major. Specifically a journalism major with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. Weird, right? For kicks and giggles, I'm curious to know what you thought I was majoring in. SPILL.

--I'm scared of volcanoes. When flying into Ecuador, we flew through a sheet of clouds only to discover a giant black cloud and a mountain spewing it on the other side. I freaked out, to say the least.

--I am obsessed with Riverdance. And Celtic music. And Celtic dancing. That really is a secret to me. When a person really knows me, they know that I am obsessed with two things, that being one of them. And I will not tell you what the other is because it is way too embarrassing.

--I love/hate photography. It pushes me in more ways than I ever thought and I am more critical about that than almost anything else that I do. I've learned more about passion and will power through it than most things.

--I'm LDS. And it's great.

In all actuality school has been kicking my butt, but in the best way possible. My posts haven't been down that much, but it has been lacking. And full of posts about...hair dye and fish eye photos. I'm wanting to block out more time in my day to do some more photography and creative stuff...and we'll see how it all works out. But if things get a little more quiet than usual, know that I'm probably trapped in the library. Come bring me some chocolate cinnamon bears, if you get the chance.

on hair dye and why you should do it

Just in case you haven't seen me recently, here's what I look like at the present moment:

Exciting, huh?

This has been much more shocking to my friends than when I dyed my hair pink.

It's been an adventure with this hair, and I keep forgetting that it is what it is, but I have to say that I have loved it. I'm convinced that changing things like this about your appearance make you more confident (especially when the majority of people around you sincerely don't like it) and more importantly make you figure out who you are. One of my fears has been that I let my appearance be too much a part of my identity. My hair is pretty reflective of my personality (bu-duh). And whenever an introduction is necessary, it was always, "Hi, I'm Anna James, I'm 20, and I have red, curly hair,"--all things that shouldn't really define who I am. Changing it up is making me work harder to be me even more. And I like it.

Am I getting deep about hair dye? Yes. You're welcome.
